We take one of their vehicles for the women. They are fully on board about leaving with us so we just pick one that has key in it and let them all pile in while we walk to the bikes we rode here. By the time we get to them, the women have pulled up behind us and are patiently waiting for us to get going.

Valdís rides with me, and I am comforted, feeling her arms around me. The ride back to the docks is entirely too short, but I am looking forward to being home. We are an entire crowd as we walk down the docks. Dagma and Bettina leading the way back to the boat while we kings bring up the rear because none of us feels entirely comfortable being so exposed. Malic is looking around as though he lost something, maybe he is just being watchful.

We hear the guns fire before the bullets hit us. Malic and I turn, standing as a physical shield in front of Valdís and the rest of the women. I know the shield has been put up only because I see a bullet bounce off. Then I feel a hand on my back and the itch of healing happening faster even than we usually do.

Chance and Gage are running back up the dock, toward the building the shots are being fired from.
